Charles Hall Frith (1876-1945) was born in Sheffield, the son of Charles Frith (1854-1912) and Mary Jane Hall (1857-1901). Charles Sen. was a file grinder, who was later landlord at the Alma Hotel, Alma Street (now the Fat Cat). Charles Jun. worked as a barman and then succeeded his father as landlord.
