Charles J. Flather (1846-1912) was born in Huddersfield, the son of Thomas Flather, a Sheffield accountant, and his wife Hannah. In 1868, Charles advertised as a table knife manufacturer and carver and fluter in pearl and ivory. The firm was apparently short-lived. In the Census (1871), Charles Flather was enumerated as a hardware traveller. By 1891, he was living in Southport and working as an advertising agent. He then moved to London and died in Sudbourne Road, Brixton, on 9 June 1912, aged 66. He left £52.
