This family (sometimes spelled Dewsbury) was French Huguenot in origin and settled in the West Midlands. According to family sources, Samuel Duesbury (1822-1909) was born in Manchester, the son of Samuel (a copperplate engraver) and Sarah née Bradley. In 1841, he was living with his parents in Salford, Manchester, and was an apprentice wood carver. He married Esther née Pryse in 1850 at the Upper (Unitarian) Chapel in Norfolk Street, Sheffield.
