Charles James Allen (1853-1938) and Sidney Darwin (1851-1928) joined forces in 1887.
Allen had been born in St Pancras, London, the son of Charles Vincent Allen (c1829 - 1867), a jeweller, and his wife, Amy, nee Hudson. His paternal grandfather was James Baylis Allen (1803 - 1876), the respected artist and engraver (see Wikipedia for more information) and his maternal grandfather was named as James Hudson, 'the Irish comedian' in his mother's death notice (The Era, 19 January 1868)
