Jonathan Dearden was born in Sheffield in 1772, the son of James Dearden and christened at Sheffield Parish Church (now the Cathedral). According to the Cutlers' Company records, he was apprenticed as a cutler in 1784 to a Jonathan France and was granted his freedom in 1797.
