John Woolhouse (c.1775-1847), a lancet and fleam maker, first appeared in the directory (1797) at Coalpit Lane, using the mark ‘WOOLHOUSE’. By 1817, John Woolhouse was in Smith Street, where he worked until his death. He and his wife, Ann, had a son, Joseph. John Woolhouse died on 27 February 1847, aged 72, and was buried in St Paul’s churchyard. His press obituary described him as ‘the oldest grinder in Sheffield’.
