Samuel Pass established an ironmonger’s business at Coalpit Lane. He may have been the son of John Pass, a carrier in Sheffield, and his wife, Elizabeth. If so, he was baptised on 11 May 1785. Samuel’s traded especially in iron, steel, and wire, and by the 1820s he also described himself in directories as a table knife manufacturer and horn scale cutter.
