James Morton (c.1823-1870) was born in Eyam. He was apparently the son of Joseph Morton, a stonemason, and his wife, Elizabeth. In 1851, the family lived in Chester Street, Sheffield. Joseph traded as a stonemason in Coalpit Lane (Cambridge Street), but several of his sons became involved in the horn trade. Joseph Morton (c.1833-1865) was a horn cutter in Monmouth Street.
