William Gunstone was born in Sheffield in about 1825. He was the son of James Gunstone, who in the Census (1851) was a widowed scissor smith, living in Norfolk Road. James had been born in London (he was apparently enumerated in the Census in 1841 in Wellington Street, with his occupation as ‘silver plater’).
