Alfred Owen (c.1822-1880) was a scissors grinder, but details on his early life are scarce. He probably worked for Steer & Webster and was likely one of the group of scissors grinders, who created a disturbance at William Steer’s factory in a labour dispute (Sheffield Independent, 22 June 1844). Owen’s first appearance in a directory was in 1852, when he was a partner in Newbould, Owen & Gill, a scissors manufacturer at Allen Street. His partners were George Newbould and John Gill. ....
