Joseph Edley (1856-1934) was born in Sheffield, the son of John Edley, a saw maker, and his wife, Elizabeth. After training as a clerk, he became a button hook manufacturer. In 1893, he was a dressing case maker with H. Frankland Smith as Smith & Edley in West Street (see Royse Bros). This ended in 1899, when he formed J.
