James Eccleston (c.1819-1890) was born in France (as a British subject), but by 1841 was living in Suffolk Road, Sheffield, and working as a bookkeeper. In about 1851, he became a dealer in Waingate selling Sheffield and Birmingham goods. He stocked all kinds of cutlery, such as table, pocket, and butchers’ knives, and a variety of tools.
