Robert William Handley (1843-1909) was born in Sheffield, the son of Charles Handley, a silversmith, and his wife Mary. Robert was trained as a scissors forger and in 1873 rented a dwelling house / warehouse / workshop at 127-129 Scotland Street, where he launched a business as a scissors manufacturer.
