George Whaley (1830-1882) was the son of Samuel (1810-1878), a spring-knife scale maker, and his wife, Catherine. By 1851, George was a pen-knife blade maker in Westbar Green. In 1861, he advertised at Cheney Square as a manufacturer of pen, pocket, sportsman’s, and Bowie knives. George was briefly at Fox’s Yard, New Church Street, but by the late 1860s was a commercial traveller. Later he became a clerk in the scythe trade.
