The name ‘John Simpson’ was listed in directories between 1822 and the 1840s – first in Bailey Lane, then Pea Croft, then Scotland Street, and finally Edward Street. He manufactured Spanish knives (daggers), lock knives, pocket knives and spoon knives. However, John Simpson, pocket-knife manufacturer, Scotland Street, died on 20 November 1831 (aged 34) after ‘a lingering illness’. He was buried in St Peter’s churchyard.
