John Herbert ‘Sandy’ Lowe Jun. was born on 9 August 1912 at Tower Hill, Pitsmoor. His father was John Herbert Lowe, a refuse foreman; his mother was Alice. Sandy started on his fourteenth birthday at Geo. Wostenholm & Son Ltd as an apprentice butchers’ knife hafter. In 1939, the Lowe family lived at the Oval, Firth Park, with Sandy’s occupation stated as butchers’ knife hafter.
