Born in Sheffield in about 1826, Samuel Gill was based in Hollis Croft and first appeared in a directory (1852) as a maker of French and Spanish pen and pocket knives. In 1858, however, Samuel Gill – Hollis Croft – was declared bankrupt. His bankruptcy notice described him as a journeyman cutler and sometime cutlery dealer, who had also been in business as a draper between 1853 and 1854 in West Street.
