George Wish was born in Lincoln in 1846, the son of Richard, a bookbinder and bookseller, and his wife, Eliza. The latter was the sister of silversmith George Cutts. By 1861, George Wish was living at Suffolk Road, Sheffield, with the Cutts’ family. Wish was trained as an electro-plate worker and then became Cutts’ traveller in Europe and India.
